You’ve Been Boo’d
/I love Halloween. It is easily one of my favorite holidays. One of my favorite traditions at this time of year is “Boo-ing” friends and neighbors.
“Boo-ing” is a friendly tradition where you secretly leave goodies, along with a Boo sign and instructions on a friend or neighbor’s doorstep. (It’s doorbell ditching at its finest.) The person who receives the Boo is asked to “Boo” others, but it’s not mandatory. Some have called “You’ve Been Boo’d” the chain letter of trick-or-treating, but participation isn’t required, or even expected—it’s just a nice way to add sweetness to people’s days on Halloween.
This tradition started in my house years ago. I did it with my children and now I try to make a point to involve my grandchildren. It is one of the ways I try to teach them (by example) what it means to bring good to others.
There are many different ways that people “Boo,” and I don’t think there’s any right or wrong way, as it’s just a fun little way to bring a bit of Halloween excitement to someone.
The simple idea behind this is:
- You give out goodies! If there’s one thing I love about the holidays, it’s the treats.
- It gets you and your family mingling with the neighbors.
- “You’ve Been Booed” has its very own lyrical ode, à la “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” in the form of a Halloween “Boo” poem.
The rules are like a chain letter. To “boo” someone, you sneak onto their doorstep in the dark of night, leave a small bucket of tricks and treats, ring the bell and skedaddle.
Then, the person who has been “Boo’d,” puts a sign in their window saying they’ve been “Boo’d,” (there are dozens of printables on Pinterest here) and then they in turn can “Boo” to 2 other houses. <!--[if gte mso 9]>
