Sew the Library - Finding the Perfect Gift for a Dad or Grad

I was looking for the perfect gift for Dads and Grads this month.  I have a grandson graduating from high school and, of course, we have Father’s Day this month.  I needed “good guy stuff.”  I found the pattern for the perfect gift in my library.  The book is called Present Perfect 25 gift to Sew & Bestow by Betz White. The project I chose starts on page 32.  It is called Eye Candy Glasses Case.   Guys need eye glass cases for their sunglasses and I could make it up in manly fabric..

Betz White’s design are always stylish and easy to follow. She is a DIYer, designer, crafter and a bestselling author.  She is the Queen of Green.  Her projects haves a “sew green” theme and in the book she gives tips on how to incorporate reclaimed fabric into the projects.

I was first introduced to Betz White in a free Craftsy class a few years ago.  The class is called Project Upcycle.  I highly recommend the class to everyone.  I thoroughly enjoyed the class and I liked her style of teaching so well that I purchased this book.  (I own three own all three of her books.)  You can find the free class here.

Her pattern instructions are always clear and easy to follow and the items she designs have just that little extra bit of style.  The eyeglass case is fun, functional, slightly padded and has a magnetic snap and little ribbon pull tab.  I wanted to stay in the “Sew Green” vein so I chose to use fabric from deconstructed clothing.   A couple of years ago I had taken apart a men’s shirt that had a golf theme.  I picked it up at a yard sale for 25 cents.  As a shirt it was ugly but I have golfers in the family and I thought I would find a use for it.   I also had pant legs from jeans I have shortened last week.  These were perfect for the exterior.  For the interior I used a piece of scrap.

The tip in the book suggests using a men’s necktie for the inset panel.  I did not find a tie in my collection (left-over from my snake project here.)

The whole thing went together easily and looks great.   The shirt never looked so good.  The fussy cut inset is perfect and the scrap fabric from the lining goes so well with the colors on the inset.

I am very happy with the way it turned out and I am looking forward to gifting it.  I might have to make more of these for gifts and maybe one just for myself.
