Traveling to a tropical resort isn’t your only option when it comes to vacation. An increasingly popular and fun vacation is the stay-at-home-vacation or the “staycation.” I am a wholehearted devotee of the staycation. (This may come as a surprise to those who know my love for travel.) A staycation doesn’t have to be boring, or just lounging around the house. All the elements that make a trip great can be found on your home turf. Over time I’ve learned some little tricks and strategies for turning a staycation into a luxury to be savored. Here are just 12 ways to turn your staycation into a luxury vacation.
Be a tourist in your own town
Try a Google search for “Best of…” or “Things to do in…” and you’ll come across some places to visit that you didn’t even know were there. Check out Groupon for things to do near your town. Not only will you get ideas of things to do but you’ll save money doing them.
Go hunting for hidden treasure
Treasure hunting can come in many forms. Try finding hidden treasure at yard sales, thrift shops, and garage sales. Make a list of things to find and head out to the sales in your neighborhood and see how many things you can find.
Another form of treasure hunting is geocaching. According to the Geocaching website, “Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.” You can find out more information at the Geocaching website.
On a clear night, go outside with a sky map and cozy blanket. Lay down and see how many constellations you can find. Don’t have a sky map? You can download for free the Night Sky Light app (make sure your device is GPS-enabled first!) to identify stars, planets, and even satellites in the sky.
Grab a camera
Head out for a walking tour of your neighborhood, your local downtown, or maybe a local urban or county park. See if you can take a picture of something that starts with each letter of the alphabet. Share on Instagram or Snapchat.
Do a spa day
Yes, you can recreate the spa treatments at home but nothing beats a good day spa experience. Indulge in aromatherapy. Enjoy the mindful lighting. Allow tension to melt away with a deeply soothing and balancing hot stone massage.
Enjoy Your Local Theater
Check the local newspaper or theater website to see what plays, musicals, concerts, comedy shows will be playing during your planned staycation time, then book tickets and plan for an evening at the theater.
Take an art class
Make a mosaic, paint some pottery, sketch a still life, or paint a rock.
Indulge you inner “foodie”
Make dining an event! Eat at a new restaurant you’ve being dying to try. Don’t just stick to the same old comfort food. Try new cuisines. Or there may be theme restaurants, dinner theater, or even a murder-mystery dinner train or cruise near you. Do a self-guided tour of local chocolatiers or cupcake shops or take a guided walking food tour. Take a cooking class or spend an afternoon trying all those recipes you’ve been saving.
Ride public transportation
Most major cities have some sort of commuter train, trolley, or bus system that can also be used to see the sights of the city.
Go for a drive
Hop in the car, crank up the tunes, and check out the local sights. For even more fun, head out in the late afternoon and catch the sunset from somewhere new.
Spend some time outdoors, every day!
1 out of 10 people say the best part of being on vacation is being able to spend time outdoors. So go fly a kite, take a walk, go for a bike ride, or take a hike. Picnics, parks, local hiking and bike trails are great for cheap, outdoor fun. So lather on the sunscreen, grab a hat, and get outside!
Try something new
Try one new thing each day of your staycation. Challenge yourself to get outside of your usual activities. It doesn’t have to be zip lining over an alligator pit. It can be just as challenging (but not involve alligators) like singing karaoke. There also paintballing, laser tag, escape rooms, or wake boarding, paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking or white water rafting. Just grab a friend and have some fun!
These are just 12 of the way you can turn your staycation into a luxury vacation. With a little imagination, you can recharge your body and soul on a luxury staycation.
